ReadCultured.com is committed to accuracy in everything we publish. When we make mistakes — and every news organization does — we believe in correcting them quickly, clearly, and transparently. We do not hide errors, quietly edit published content, or minimize the significance of corrections to protect our reputation.
This Corrections Policy explains how we handle errors, how we categorize them, and how readers can report them.
1. Our Commitment to Accuracy
Accuracy is the foundation of trustworthy journalism. Before publication, every article on ReadCultured.com is reviewed by an editor to verify facts, sources, and claims. Despite these safeguards, errors can and do occur. When they do, we own them.
We treat corrections not as an embarrassment but as an essential part of responsible journalism. A publication that corrects its errors openly is more trustworthy than one that does not.
2. Types of Corrections
We categorize corrections into three levels based on their significance:
Minor Corrections
Minor corrections involve small factual errors that do not materially affect the meaning or conclusion of a story. Examples include:
Misspelled names or titles Incorrect dates or times Wrong job titles or affiliations Typographical errors that create factual inaccuracies
For minor corrections, we correct the error in the article text and append a brief correction notice at the bottom of the article stating what was changed and when.
Significant Corrections
Significant corrections involve errors that materially affect the meaning, accuracy, or fairness of a story. Examples include:
Incorrect statistics or data that change the story’s conclusion Misquotation of a source Misidentification of a person involved in a story Inaccurate description of an event or its outcome
For significant corrections, we place a prominent correction notice at the top of the article, clearly stating what was wrong and what the correct information is, along with the date of the correction.
Major Corrections and Retractions
In rare cases where an article contains fundamental factual errors that cannot be adequately corrected through updates, or where an article should not have been published in the first place, we will issue a formal retraction.
A retracted article will be clearly labeled as retracted at the top of the page. The original content may be removed or preserved depending on the circumstances, but the retraction notice will always remain visible. We will publish a separate retraction statement explaining what went wrong and why the article was retracted.
3. What We Do Not Do
ReadCultured will never:
Silently edit or alter published content without disclosing the change Delete an article to avoid accountability for an error without explanation Minimize or bury a correction to reduce its visibility Issue a correction only after public pressure without acknowledging the delay Alter quotes, facts, or context in a way that changes meaning without full disclosure
4. Updates vs. Corrections
Not all changes to published articles are corrections. We distinguish between corrections and updates as follows:
Corrections — A correction fixes something that was wrong at the time of publication. It is always disclosed with a correction notice.
Updates — An update adds new information to a story that was accurate at the time of publication but has since developed. Updates are labeled with the date and nature of the new information added. An update is not a correction and does not imply an original error was made.
Clarifications — Occasionally an article may be technically accurate but written in a way that is misleading or could be misunderstood. In these cases we issue a clarification notice explaining how the content should be understood. Clarifications are labeled as such and distinguished from corrections.
5. Corrections to Crime and Public Safety Reporting
We apply particular care to corrections involving crime and public safety reporting given the potential impact on individuals’ reputations and safety.
If we report that an individual has been arrested, charged, or is a suspect in a crime, and that information later changes — for example if charges are dropped, the individual is acquitted, or we learn the original information was incorrect — we will promptly update the original article and publish a prominent correction notice.
In cases where an individual has been exonerated or charges dropped, we will make reasonable efforts to ensure the corrected article appears prominently in search results by updating the article’s headline and opening paragraph to reflect the outcome.
